Outlook 2002 stopping you from opening attachments

As a security measure, Outlook 2002 may block attachments that could possibly be harmful (contain viruses, etc.). The attachments are actually still associated with the e-mail, but just aren't accessible.

You can suggest the sender save the file to a file share, or use a file compression program to zip the file. This will change the extension of the file, but not its contents. You can also have the sender change the extension, send the attachment, followed by the recipient changing the extension back to the original extension.

This may be impractical because many users have Windows configured not to show file extensions or both parties may not be familiar with the file extensions of Microsoft Office files. When composing an e-mail message, after clicking on To, the Outlook Contacts cannot be selected as an address book.

To correct this problem, in the folder view of Outlook, right-click on the Contacts folder. In the resulting menu, left-click on Properties. Click on the Outlook Address Book tab and place a check mark beside "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book."

Click the OK button. The Outlook Contact listing should be a choice when composing an e-mail.
